The Politecnico di Milano continues climbing the QS World University Rankings, reaching the 137th place in the 2021 edition. Among Engineering and Technical universities, currently it’s ranked 20th worldwide and 7th in Europe.

The university has three main campuses located in Milan, the economic capital of Italy, the heart of fashion and design industries, and five more premises around the Lombardy region. Many important scientists and architects studied and taught here, among them Achille Castiglioni, Gió Ponti, Renzo Piano and Aldo Rossi, both Pritzker Prize in 1990 and 1998 respectively, and Giulio Natta, Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963.

The Politecnico di Milano offers innovative programs at all levels within its schools of Engineering, Architecture and Design. Thanks to a strong internationalization policy, almost all programs at the master level are taught entirely in English, attracting an ever-increasing number of talented foreign students, forming a wide community from more than 100 countries.

Teaching is increasingly related to research, a key commitment that enables to achieve results of high international standards, while creating connections with the business world. Strategic research is carried out mainly in the fields of energy, transport, planning, management, design, mathematics and natural and applied sciences, ICT, built environment, cultural heritage, with more than 130 laboratories, among which a Wind Tunnel, a Crash Test center, PoliFAB and PoliFactory.

The School of Management creates and shares knowledge at the intersection between engineering, management and economics. Among its facilities, the Industry 4.0 lab bridges interdisciplinary research between industrial, mechanical, automation and electronic engineers.

The Global Observatory emerges from OBREAL which was created as a network in order to implement a cooperation project of the European Commission (DG RELEX y EuropeAid). At that moment, the Commission pointed out in its call that the relationship between the European Union and Latin America had become closer as a result of bi-regional summits, existing association agreements (i.e. México and Chile) and association agreement negotiations. Therefore, more and more advices were required for decision-making in the area of bi-regional relationships.

OBREAL was born in this context, with the aim of contributing to the creation of a network of institutions and organizationsfrom both regions which had no coordination mechanisms and/or limited visibility. As a result, OBREAL was set up by 23 academic institutions, research centres in Europe and Latin America, and their own networks.

Between 2004 and 2016, OBREAL’s research was organized in five thematic areas:

  • Trade and financial relations and regional integration
  • Democracy, human rights and the rule of law
  • Social and development cooperation
  • Global governance and multi-regionalism
  • Civil society and institution’s building

Since 2017, the Global Observatory re-defined its former thematic areas and has extended its outreach  from Europe to Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, connecting important actors in diverse sectors in collaborative projects for development. In this new context, and keeping its main goals, the Global Observatory concentrated its actions in project managing, incorporating new members and supporting institutions in the network.

Africa and  the Arab countries

In Africa and Arab Countries, the Global Observatory works to promote research collaboration and capacity building among universities.

It addresses university leadership from both regions, but also heads of doctoral schools, individual scholars and project leaders involved in bi-regional research collaboration in energy, water and sustainability, from sciences, engineering and social sciences, and last but not least, policy makers and representatives from enterprise and innovative industries related to the issues.

Global Observatory’s strategy is to open a sustainable process of dialogue and mutual understanding, to exchange knowledge and to increase cooperation between African, Arab and European Universities and other stakeholders in these regions.

Politecnico di Milano since 1863 – A world class university for Architecture, Design and Engineering. The Politecnico di Milano is one of the most outstanding technical Universities in Europe. Founded in 1863, in many disciplines, it is regarded as a leading research institution worldwide.

Nowadays, it covers the 17th position in the QS ranking for Engineering and Technical universities worldwide (6th in Europe). Politecnico di Milano has three main campuses located in Milan, economic capital of Italy, the heart of fashion and design industries, and five more premises around the Lombardy region. Thanks to a strong internationalization policy, almost all programs at the master levels are taught entirely in English, attracting an ever-increasing number of talented foreign students, forming a wide community from more than 100 countries.

Among its facilities, the Industry 4.0 lab bridges interdisciplinary research between industrial, mechanical, automation and electronical engineers.
